Mogadishu Port Authority (MPA) is the government institution responsible for managing and overseeing Mogadishu Port, Somalia’s largest and most important seaport. The port, also known as Mogadishu International Port, serves as the country’s main maritime gateway and a critical hub for international trade and commerce in the Horn of Africa.

Mogadishu Port Authority main seaport in Somalia

This is a break-bulk section of a port with a quay of 1,478 meters comprising of 5 main quays, 2 warehouses with 64,463.5 sq. meters and open storage of 201,613

Mogadishu Port Container Terminal is operated by Albayrak and manage the container handling activities at berth Number 3-4. The terminal has a total quay length of 540 meters. Back up facilities of container terminal includes the dry port located about 2 kilometers from The Airport.

There are two oil terminals in Mogadishu Port include Somali Fuel & COSTALINA Oil Terminals, also the port have 2 tanker berths for handling refined oil. It has capacity to accommodate tankers of up to 30,000 deadweight tons with fast discharge speed.

Historical Significance

Mogadishu Port has a rich history, dating back to antiquity when it was known as Sarapion. It was modernized during the Italian colonial period in the early 20th century, with significant upgrades such as breakwaters, dykes, and transport links. The port played a crucial role in regional trade and continues to be a strategic maritime hub for East Africa. By the 1930s, it has become one of East Africa’s largest and most strategic harbor, with rail and road links to the interior.
