EU Partnership Advances Rescue Operations at Mogadishu Port

The Minister of Ports and Marine Transport of the Federal Government of Somalia, H.E. Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur, the Director General of the Mogadishu Port Authority, H.E. Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur (Americo), and the European Union Ambassador to Somalia, Mrs. Francesca Di Mauro, witnessed the official signing of a cooperation agreement aimed at strengthening maritime rescue operations in Somalia.

The agreement was signed between H.E. Ahmed Yusuf Abdulle, Director General of the Ministry of Ports and Marine Transport, and the Head of EUCAP Somalia. The partnership focuses on European Union support to equip the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), as part of broader initiatives to enhance maritime safety and modernize operational capacity at Mogadishu Port.

The cooperation marks an important step toward improving emergency response capabilities, strengthening coordination mechanisms, and ensuring safer maritime operations along Somalia’s coastline and within its port facilities.

During the event, H.E. Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur (Americo) expressed his appreciation to the European Union for its continued support in developing Mogadishu Port and strengthening critical maritime infrastructure. He highlighted the importance of international partnerships in advancing safety standards and operational excellence within Somalia’s port sector.

For his part, H.E. Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur reaffirmed the Federal Government of Somalia’s strong commitment to improving the quality, efficiency, and safety of the country’s ports, emphasizing that maritime security and rescue capabilities are essential components of sustainable port development.

The agreement reflects the shared commitment of Somalia and the European Union to enhancing maritime safety, supporting institutional capacity, and building a modern and resilient port system that contributes to national development and regional maritime security.
