As part of Somalia’s renewed commitment to global maritime governance and international cooperation, a high-level Somali delegation participated in the 34th Session of the Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), held in London, United Kingdom.
The delegation was led by the Federal Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, H.E. Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur, and included the Director General of Mogadishu Port, H.E. Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur (Americo). Their participation underscores Somalia’s growing engagement in international maritime affairs, with a focus on strengthening cooperation, improving port efficiency, and aligning national systems with global maritime standards.
Throughout the Assembly, H.E. Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur (Americo) actively participated in discussions and engagements on maritime governance, safety, and port operations. Representing Mogadishu Port Authority, he emphasized Somalia’s ongoing efforts to modernize its ports, enhance operational efficiency, and position Mogadishu Port as a strategic gateway for regional and international trade.
On the sidelines of the Assembly, the Somali delegation held an important meeting with the Secretary-General of the IMO, Mr. Arsenio Dominguez, attended by the Minister of Ports and Marine Transport, the Director General of Mogadishu Port, and the Ambassador of Somalia to the United Kingdom, H.E. Abdulkadir Hashi. During the meeting, the Minister formally handed over the documents confirming Somalia’s accession to the IMSO Convention.
This milestone represents a significant advancement in Somalia’s maritime sector, reinforcing national efforts to improve maritime safety, strengthen regulatory and oversight frameworks, and deepen engagement with key international maritime institutions. Accession to the IMSO Convention further enhances Somalia’s standing within the global maritime community and supports long-term institutional development.
The participation of Mogadishu Port Authority in the 34th IMO Assembly reflects Somalia’s strategic vision to build resilient maritime infrastructure, uphold international standards, and actively contribute to shaping global maritime policies that support safe, secure, and efficient shipping.
